Implemented Activities

  • Organized over 36,700 women in nine sub-cities of Addis Ababa in Saving and Credit Cooperatives and provided them with access to various training and capacity building opportunities
  • Facilitated the formation and legalization of 83 women’s Cooperatives currently embracing over 15,000 active members and provided leadership skills trainings to their leaders.
  • Facilitated the formation of the Union of Cooperatives (the Union of WISE SACCOs) so that the Union can autonomously co-ordinate the activities of the cooperatives in the long-term.
  • Disbursed a loan of around 290 million million Birr to members through their cooperatives and Union for business, housing and education. The highest loan one can take has reached Birr 100,000 and Birr 300,000 from a primary cooperative and union respectively. Recently, one of the oldest cooperative raised its highest loan to Birr 100,000.
  • Over 90 million Birr was mobilized as savings.
  • Initiated the concept of Health Idir (a micro-insurance scheme) to promote health care as well as to instil the value of mutual support among members before death. This scheme, having started in 2002, currently has a membership of over 1,608 women.
  • Provided training to over 33,500 women in business and other skills.
  • Provided Home-and-Results-Based literacy training to its illiterate members. Currently the scheme adopts the child-to mother program.
  • Secured market places for over 400 women and constructed seven market shelters of different sizes.
  • Organized urban agriculture campaigns every year since 2008 through distributing seeds and seedlings to over 11,000 households and provision of training.
  • Promoted innovation by conducting new and viable business idea competitions since 2008.
  • Organised kids days and let them take part in talent shows, competitions, etc.
  • Provided different production and marketing tools on cost sharing basis – mainly energy-saving cooking stoves.
  • Organized various events (bazaars, exhibitions, etc) which enabled members to promote their products and services.
  • Undertook environmental sanitation activities by constructing pit latrines at different sites and clearing some infected areas.
  • Piloted the production of fuel briquettes from dry waste and fuel-saving injera stove (Gonzeye) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Rural Energy Promotion and Development Center and formed producers group who are currently producing and selling their products.
  • Initiated a textile value-chain project in Gule Sub City in partnership with MEDA.
  • Formed Action Groups in all existing cooperatives to engage the community in the area of gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS and gender (activity done in 2007-08).
